Ben Hayes Sweepstakes Trophy

The band parent voted at the last meeting to create a new sweepstakes trophy for the invitational, in Ben Hayes name. I have been in contact with a lot of the alumni who would like to help with this project so since Ben was there director, the alumni will be working to provide funding for the new trophy to be made by either Zimmerman’s Art Glass of Kauffman Trophy. For those of you that don't know Ben. Mr. Hayes was the director of the Vanguard for 26 years and led the Vanguard to 10 State Finals in the RCA Dome. Mr. Hayes accomplishments with the Vanguard are to numerous to list. So the Vanguard has decided to honor him and his family with the Ben Hayes Sweepstakes Trophy, which will be presented to the winner of our invitational every year.

Drumline Mini Golf Scramble / Vanguard Golf Scramble

Unfortunately this year we were not given the opportunity to have a winter drumline competition at Corydon Central. So the drumline has decided to host a mini—golf scramble to help with the cost of there program. We will combine it with the main golf scramble that we have in may for sponsors. The drumline mini-golf scramble will be held on March 7, at Golf shores. It will run much the same as our big golf scramble, but will allow for a lot more teams.

We will begin working on hole sponsors as soon as possible. Hole sponsors will have a choice this year. To sponsor a hole for the drumline mini-golf scramble only will be $50 and to sponsor a hole for the Vanguard Scramble (at the Country Club) will be the usual $100, or you can sponsor a hole at both events for $125.

We will also need volunteers to help with cooking, and registration. (for more information see the drumline page)

Text Box: It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write this part of the Web Site. The Vanguard’s band director of 26 years died at about 12 noon on the 6th of Feb . Ben Hayes was the director of the Vanguard for 26 years and lead the Vanguard to 10 Indiana State Marching Finals. Ben came to the Corydon Panther Marching Band in 1979. He then changed the name to the First Capitol Vanguard and later to the Corydon Central Vanguard. During his 26 years with the Vanguard, he lead the Vanguard to not only the 10 State finals. But also took the Vanguard on several trips to Disney, the Peach Bowl Parade, several Thanksgiving Parades, including the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade, to New York, the Bahamas, and several other highly honored positions. Under the expert supervision of Ben Hayes the Vanguard found its identity, and became a truly feared competitor on multiple levels. Ben retired from the Vanguard 5 years ago and moved to Lexington Ky. To be closer to his family. About a year ago Ben suffered a rather large Stroke, that he was not expected to recover from. But being the true fighter that Ben was he fought through it. Unfortunately he was never able to completely recover and died from complications of that stroke. He is survived by his wife Joyce, son Jason, and Daughter Britney both of which marched for the Vanguard in the 90’s. There will be a memorial service at Corydon Central High School. We will also keep the black line through the Corydon Central Vanguard in memory of Ben Hayes for the next year. The Current High School Band will be joined by any alumni of the Vanguard that wish to play at the memorial service. Date and time to be announced soon.

Visiting is from 4-8pm Tuesday the 9th and from 10am to the service which is at 1pm on the Wed. the 10th. If anyone wants to come they are welcome, if you can't we totally understand, there will be a memorial in Corydon planned. Thank you all for your incredible words of support and love. They have really brought a light to an otherwise dark time.

Just an FYI, Sturgis Ky. is 1 hour behind us, so the funeral is at 2pm our time here in Corydon. I will have directions and all the info posted on the band web site sometime this afternoon. Also those wanting to go from the Corydon area, Alice McCullum and I will be forming a caravan to go down there. I will have more info for those wanting in the caravan later today. We will set up a meeting place and time to leave. If anyone has any further questions you can either e-mail me or give me a call at 812-734-6358.
